WHAT IS SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION?

Scalp Micropigmentation (commonly known as SMP or micropigmentation) is a cosmetic tattoo that creates natural-looking hair follicles using microneedles and organic pigments. This gives the illusion of a completely full head of hair, closely shaved to a “buzz cut.” When this procedure is performed by a trained and experienced SMP practitioner, the results appear 100% natural. Your work colleagues, friends and family members won't be aware that you’ve undergone treatment. The most common feedback in this respect is that clients receive compliments of looking younger or healthier.

Over three sessions, we gradually add density, allowing you to adjust to your new hairline. Each session can take anywhere from one to three hours depending on the degree of hair loss. Treatment sessions are spaced apart by a minimum of ten days. With our methods there is virtually no pain at all involved. Most describe the treatment as relaxing and therapeutic. The worst feedback regarding the sensation would be, at worst, slightly irritating.

Losing your hair can be a daunting process for both men and women. We fully understand that your confidence and self-esteem can be knocked, that's why we are here to help you.

This treatment really is the perfect solution for those who have suffered from typical hair loss problems or alopecia, and is a great alternative to hair transplants.

This page will provide you with everything you need to know about smp and more. Scroll down to see more information about this truly amazing treatment.

TYPES OF HAIR TATTOO TREATMENTS

Scalp Pigmentation can be a solution for many hair loss issues. Here are some of the ways we can help you.

smp for scars

Hair Transplant Scars

A common byproduct of hair transplant procedures - scars can leave unsightly, pale, bald patches at the back of your head.

Our scar camouflage is the perfect way to hide this side effect and blends in with your natural hair colour.

smp for thinning hair

Thinning Hair

A hair tattoo can be a wonderful addition to a head of hair that has good coverage but poor density. Micropigmentation can add a base layer of colour to the scalp and alleviate the contrast of hair to skin.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does scalp micropigmentation last?

Results can be permanent, but over time the colour usually fades to a lighter shade. We suggest having a top-up appointment every 3 - 5 years to keep your scalp looking in top condition.

Is it Painful?

Although many people think this treatment may be painful, in reality, the answer is no. At worst, most clients describe the feeling as slightly irritating.

What if my hair goes grey?

At the time of your treatment, we will match your hair colour to our pigments for the perfect blend. However, if your hair does begin to turn grey, we can adjust the pigment shade on your retouch appointment every 3-5 years, maintaining a seamless transition.

Grey Hair appears lighter when the hair is longer, but when shaved down, the root of the hair is actually darker. And as our pigments fade over time you will find that going grey will not affect the appearance of your scalp micropigmentation treatment.

How much does it cost?

Our prices vary depending on the amount of hair-loss you currently have. Our prices range from £450 to £3000. For more information on our costs please visit our prices page

Scalp Micropigmentation Prices

How many treatments does it take?

It can take between 2 - 4 sessions to fully complete. Each session must be spaced apart by at least 10 days to allow the skin adequate time to heal.

Will people know I've had it done?

Scalp Micropigmentation is difficult to notice when done by an experienced SMP Technician. Whichever clinic of ours you use, we guarantee the highest standard.

How do you choose my hairline?

When considering this treatment, it's important to understand that this will not wash away. A hairline that suits you today, may not look right when you age. Your technician will go through a variety of different styles and suggest a hairline to suit you.

Will it change colour like a normal tattoo?

Unlike traditional tattoo ink which contain a wide variety of constituents such as iron oxide, our organic pigments are made from just three ingredients. SMP treatments when carried out with the correct materials will simply fade to a lighter shade over the years, which is why we suggest having a top-up every three to five years.

What if I have long hair?

People with long hair can still benefit from this treatment, although a consultation would be required to determine if there is enough hair left for the procedure to look realistic.

Can I go straight back to work?

There is no downtime involved with our hair tattoos. Redness may occur with some clients and can last up to twenty four hours post-treatment. Clients usually return to work straight away and can wear hats should they feel the need.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Before having scalp micropigmentation performed, you must be aware of the contraindications that are associated. Although some of these conditions may mean we cannot perform the procedure, your practitioner will advise you during your consultation on any causes for concern.

  • Herpes simplex virus
  • Immune System weaknesses
  • Diabetes
  • Previous Cosmetic surgery
  • Undergoing Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy
  • Infections - bacterial, fungal or viral
  • Any skin conditions on the scalp including but not limited to dermatitis, bruising, sunburn and skin ulcers.
  • Allergies
  • Haemophilia
  • Heart disease
  • HIV, AIDS or any other blood conditions

PREPARATION FOR YOUR TREATMENT

It's best to prepare for your appointment ahead of time to ensure the best outcome.

48 Hours Before your SMP appointment

  • Please don't consume anything that may thin the blood, for example alcohol or aspirin. Although bleeding is extremely minimal during treatments, blood thinning compounds can cause more bleeding than usual, resulting in adverse effects.

General Preperation

  • The results looks best when your hair is shaved between a grade 0 and 1. Shave the night before your treatment or we can do this for you on the day.
  • Take a shower on the morning of your SMP.

Aftercare Advice

For the first three days following your procedure do not

  • Touch your scalp (unless absolutely necessary)
  • Wash your scalp
  • Shave your scalp
  • Expose your head to any strong sunlight
  • Swim
  • Sweat

Once this initial period of three days is over, for the next week, please ensure that you:

  • Wash your scalp daily with water only
  • Moisturise your scalp daily with a gentle moisturiser that is free from alcohol (Palmer’s Cocoa Butter is a good choice)
  • Shave your head gently with care not to be abrasive
  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to your scalp if it will be exposed to strong sunlight
  • Do not swim without wearing a swimming cap
  • Do not sweat excessively
  • Do not itch, pick, scratch or rub your scalp

When a week has passed since your last session, it is important that you continue to:

  • Wash and moisturise your scalp daily
  • Take care when shaving your scalp
  • Apply strong sunscreen on days you know your scalp will be exposed to strong sunlight

Please remember that the colour of your Scalp Micropigmentation procedure will appear darker in the first couple of weeks following the treatment, and the true shade will not be visible until at least the first week following your last session. During the healing process, the colour may seem to have faded as it is obscured by the healing skin. Under no circumstances should you have further permanent cosmetic work undertaken during this healing period.

In order to keep your work in good condition it may be necessary to have a maintenance procedure around every three to five years, though this will vary for each individual. The cost of this procedure is roughly a quarter of the original procedure.
